As in many regions around the world, Southeast Asia has been impacted by global climate change and the ecological effects of rising sea levels, deforestation, widening urban development, and pollution. A region rich in natural resources, with a long history of colonial extraction, Southeast Asia is also the home of a large number of artists working with the natural environment, whether in their use of materials or subject matter. In recent years, the concerns for the future of the planet have also made their way into the works of contemporary artists, many of whom have been featured in international art exhibitions, museums, and galleries worldwide. This special issue of Moussons features essays on the relationship between art and ecology in contemporary Southeast Asian art: the articles focus on the ongoing ecological devastation of the warsin Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, on the damage done to an artist’s archive in flooding prone Philippines, on the hazards of the sea, on the legacy of the colonial spice trade in Indonesia, and on national environmental politics in Singapore and Vietnam. In articulating the fields of ecology and of contemporary art, this issue brings critical attention to the pressing issues facing today’s world through the voices and visions of artists, critics, curators, and scholars.
